Joe Sampson grew up in Oceanside, CA and started coaching in 1985 because of his love for the game of volleyball as a player and considers himself a good teacher. Joe connect with his players and families and tries to find creative ways to help individual athletes connect with the game. Joe has coached at the high school and club level and enjoys teaching setting and designing team offenses. Joe appreciates the technical aspects of setting and the creative opportunity to design an offense around the strengths of the players on his teams. Players describe Joe’s coaching style as fast-paced and skills-focused, but attentive and open to meeting the needs of the players on the team. Joe believes to be a good team, players must bond, possess a positive mindset, and enjoy the ups and downs of the game. His coaching philosophy is that kindness counts, and he believes there is opportunity for athletes of all skill levels to play the game. Some of his notable coaching achievements include having coached several league and high school division championship teams as well as a national-level club team to the finals in the Junior Olympics. He is also proud to have coached a few of his setters who later went on to play college volleyball in both Northern and Southern California. When not playing volleyball, Joe’s hobbies include fitness training, playing bass guitar and drums, and repairing broken phones!
