Most players know the volleyball approach. Left-right-left, swing your arms, jump, hit—check! But knowing the steps isn’t the same as owning the movement. At SoCal, we teach players not just the how, but the why—especially when it comes to one of the most important offensive skills in the game: the approach.

In this quick video, Coach Aimee breaks down how to make your approach more physical, powerful, and confident—all things we focus on in our camps and clinics.

🏐 What We’re Working On:

Being physical with your approach—from footwork to arm swing. That means:

  • Keeping your head and chest facing down (not up) to drive your momentum forward
  • Bringing your arms back as far as possible to use your full body weight in your jump
  • Staying low in your knees to launch higher off the ground
  • Engaging your core and shoulders to power through the ball
  • Finishing with control—land strong, head down, facing forward

Fun fact: Your arms, shoulders, and upper body together can account for up to 20% of your body weight—so if you’re not using them fully, you’re leaving serious power on the table!

🎯 Coach Aimee’s Challenge of the Month:

Every time you walk into a new room at home—do a big, exaggerated “monster approach.” Arms back, knees bent, and jump like you’re trying to hit the doorframe!

(Sorry, parents. But hey—it works!)
