Andrew Richardson grew up in Oceanside and started coaching in 2011, because of his love for the game. He loves being able to coach each generation after himself and see how well they perform. Andrew has experience and excels at coaching middle school, high school, community college, NAIA, and professional level athletes. Players describe his coaching style as stern but fun. Andrew believes to be successful, a team must enjoy the sport, have coachability, and be team players. Andrew strives to instill this in his athletes. Andrew chose to work at SoCal Volleyball Club because SoCal has a good sense of community, and he is excited to coach alongside his friends.

Notable coaching achievements include being awarded AVCA’s top 30 coaches in the nation that are under 30 years old in 2022. When he first began coaching at Oceanside High, between all 3 programs for indoor, only 2-3 kids out of 45 had played indoor previously. By the time he conluded his coaching career at Oceanside High after 5 years, over 35 out of the 45 had club indoor experience. Andrew believes he had a strong influence in the program’s growth as he stressed the importance of playing indoor every year.

When not coaching you’ll find Andrew playing beach volleyball very regularly. He also enjoys going to the movies and traveling in his free time.

Melissa Vivas

Melissa Vivas grew up in Cypress and started coaching in 2019, because she enjoyed the game and wanted young athletes to have a good experience playing volleyball. Melissa has experience and excels at coaching middle school and high school level athletes. Players describe her coaching style as calm and understanding as she feels it is important to be patient when coaching because young athletes are hearing new information. Melissa believes to be successful, a team must trust one another and she strives to instill this in her athletes. Melissa chose to work at SoCal Volleyball Club because she misses being around the game and wanted to get back into coaching again. When not coaching you’ll find Melissa having fun outdoors and camping. She also enjoys the beach and spending time with her friends and family.

Janell Spires

Janell Spires grew up in San Marcos and started coaching in 2023 because of her love for the sport. Janell has been playing volleyball for years and played at the highest level for SoCal since her 14s season. She also currently plays as an outside hitter at Palomar College, boasting numerous accolades throughout her high school and collegiate career. Janell wants to share her knowledge and passion for the game with others. She believes that coaching is so rewarding as she is able to see players improve their skills, work together as a team, and have fun on the court. Janell aspires to contribute to each individual’s growth and development both an athlete and person. Janell has experience and excels at coaching middle school and high school level athletes. Players describe her coaching style as encouraging and supportive while providing constant feedback. Janell believes to be successful, a team must communicate with one another and have trust in each other. Teams must also know how to problem-solve and work together through challenges and she strives to instill this in her athletes. Janell chose to work at SoCal Volleyball Club because she wants to share her passion for volleyball with everyone.

Clara Sullivan

Clara Sullivan grew up in Shaver Lake, CA and started coaching in 2023 because of her love for the sport of volleyball and for sparking growth within players. Clara has experience and excels at coaching middle school level athletes. Players describe her coaching style as as uplifting and communicative regarding volleyball technique, while also holding high expectations centered around court presence and player attitude. Clara believes to be successful, a team must work together while communicating efficiently and she strives to instill this in her athletes. Clara chose to work at SoCal Volleyball Club because she believes that volleyball is an amazing sport that can have such a positive impact on a young adults life. She hopes to teach her athletes skills that are applicable both on and off the court. Clara had the opportunity to play for some amazing and inspiring volleyball coaches in club volleyball. It is her dream to be able to provide a similar experience for aspiring athletes.
