Character Through Kindness.
Rachel’s love for volleyball began at the early age of ten years old. She played for four years, starting in fifth grade, at Saint Patrick Catholic School. Then she went on to play for Tri-City Christian High School. Rachel started on the Junior Varsity as a freshman and then was brought up to be a part of the Varsity Team throughout the CIF and State Championship Playoffs. During her sophomore year, Rachel made the Varsity Team at Tri-City Christian. As a Junior at Tri-City Christian, Rachel started on the Varsity Team as a right side hitter and defensive specialist. She made Second Team All CIF Division V and was awarded a membership to the San Diego Union-Tribune's All-Academic Team for achieving a grade point average of 4.43.
In her senior year, Rachel was elected captain of the Varsity Team and played as an outside hitter. After she completed her last season of high school volleyball Rachel was awarded Honorable Mention All-League, First Team All CIF Division V, a membership to the San Diego Union-Tribune's All-Academic Team for achieving a grade point average of 4.47, and the Eagle Award. The Eagle Award is given in recognition of athletic excellence with a God-honoring spirit as reflected in Philippians 3:14. Rachel is in the record books for her high school and San Diego CIF Section for winning 4 straight CIF championships, 4 regional championships, and making 4 state championship appearances.
Rachel is beginning her fourth year of club volleyball. She is on the SoCal 18-1s team, coached by Johnny Walker. She is excited for the season and the opportunities that are to come. During her freshman year Rachel played for Ripcurls Volleyball Club on the 16-1s Team and for SoCal Volleyball Club on the 16-1s Trestles team during her sophomore year. Rachel played on the 17-1s team at SoCal Volleyball Club during her junior year. Rachel primarily plays outside hitter but also has experience as a right side hitter and a defensive specialist.
Rachel belongs to the St. Patrick Catholic Community in Carlsbad, California. She was baptized there, attended kindergarten through eighth grade at the parish school, and attended confirmation classes. Rachel was confirmed on May 12, 2011. After being Confirmed, Rachel attended Reach, a youth group at her parish run by Anne Facon and Maureen Gurley. Rachel volunteered her time at her parish by being an altar server (since fourth grade), assisting with the Bible Camp during the summer for 5 out of the past 6 years, and compiling and distributing Thanksgiving and Christmas Food and presents for the needy of the parish. Since Rachel’s mom is a second grade teacher at the parish school Rachel volunteers regularly in her mom’s classroom.
Rachel developed a lifelong passion for reading even before she began school. This passion has translated into Rachel’s ability to be a high achiever in the classroom. Throughout elementary school Rachel excelled in school and this has carried over to her high school classes at Tri-City Christian where she has accumulated a 4.47 GPA. She is enrolled in two honors classes and one AP class. These include Honors US History, Honors Pre-Calculus, and AP Language. Rachel especially excels in math, prompting her to consider mechanical engineering as a course of study in college.
Rachel enrolled in a second year of art as a sophomore and found the visual arts challenging yet rewarding. The time, skills, persistence, and passion to produce a piece of art align with the same demands of volleyball to produce a successful cohesive team. She submitted her art pieces to the school’s annual spring art show and to the San Diego County Art Show. Rachel won a second place ribbon at the 2011 San Diego County Fair.
Rachel is the youngest child of Al and Vanessa Fanchin. She has two older brothers. Her oldest brother, Joseph, graduated from USC with an Aerospace Engineering degree and her other brother, Thomas, graduated from USC with a Mechanical Engineering degree. Rachel’s canine family member is a black and tan mini dachshund named Jake who she cares for.
Rachel enjoys music, movies, and of course reading a good book.
